This very comfortable and welcoming cottage has a lot of original period features such as sash windows, old beams, fireplaces for those crackling cozy fires, wooden shutters and beautiful window seats to gaze over the estuary or listen to the waves lapping on the shore. The rooms are large, spacious, light and airy. Arranged over three floors, there are amazing views over the bay from every room.

Lot's to see

There's a lot to see in the cottage as there is an abundance of colourful paintings, eclectic artwork and ceramics dotted all over the cottage which have been collected from many countries over the years. The fresh décor is calming with a few feature walls to introduce warmth and interest and the neutral carpet adds to the tranquillity of the cottage.

You really are transformed into a peaceful haven where you can truly forget about the outside world.

Living room, dining room and kitchen

The living room is very spacious with open fire for those cosy winter evenings. There is also a TV and DVD with a selection of films, various books and games (such as Scrabble, Monopoly, Murder Mystery and Puzzles). Three large sofas mean that there is plenty of room to sit and chill, read, socialise without disturbing each other. The kitchen/dining room is perfect for family meals, reunions and special occasions.

Conservatory and outside areas

Leading from the dining room the conservatory is perfect for sun downers, afternoon tea or just watching wildlife and nature do what it does best. Surrounded by lush foliage and a pond behind it feels like you are at one with nature.

Outside the conservatory there are chairs and tables where weather permitting you can dine al fresco. Lack of light pollution means that you can usually see an array of stars on a clear night. Behind the conservatory there is a pond and gently sloping lawn. There is also a secluded garden and orchard with incredible views which can be reached going up the steps from the back door.

Cottage History

Built in the 18th century, this historic cottage has character and soul and is steeped in history. Indeed, has had some famous residents. John Rudyard who built the wooden Eddystone Lighthouse stayed at Empacombe Bay. The current Earl of Mount Edgcumbe also lived here for a while.

According to folklore and hearsay Lady Hamilton used to stay at the cottage in one of the top floor bedrooms and light a candle in the small window to indicate to Nelson that she was there. And when he was there he would use the same small window to look through his telescope to check up on his fleet at the Naval Dockyard. The small window/opening still exists and you can see it in the top floor blue bedroom.

Fact or fiction this lovely cottage evokes images of bygone days and romantic liaisons and you can imagine yourself being transported to those times. If only walls could talk!
